Custom Wood Fencing

In short

Custom Fencing Solutions builds custom wood fences for homes in Lexington and across Central Kentucky, in pressure-treated pine or cedar. Choose privacy, picket, board-on-board, shadowbox or horizontal styles, with custom gates, caps and trim. Wood gives you full privacy and a warm, natural look, usually at a lower starting cost than aluminum, vinyl or composite.

A custom wood fence is designed around your property: the length of each run, where the gates fall, how the fence handles a slope and which side faces the neighbors. That is what separates a fence that looks built-in from one that looks dropped in.

Central Kentucky weather decides a lot of the details. Humid summers and freeze-thaw winters are hard on wood, so the lumber, the post setting and the finish all matter. Pressure-treated pine is the most common choice and the most budget-friendly. Cedar costs more but resists rot and insects naturally and weathers to a soft silver-gray. Either way, a sealed finish applied at the right time is what keeps the boards straight and the fence looking good for years.

Planned around the rules

Before you book

Things to plan for

  • Wood needs sealing: Plan to stain or seal a wood fence and refresh it every few years. It is the single biggest factor in how long the fence lasts.
  • Pressure-treated wood must dry first: New pressure-treated lumber is wet. It usually needs several weeks or more to dry before stain will soak in properly.
  • Finished side and height rules: Many HOAs require the finished side to face out, and zoning limits fence height. Lexington requires a permit for fences 24 inches or taller.
  • Utility lines must be marked: A Kentucky 811 locate request is required at least two full business days before digging.
Afterwards

Looking after your fence

  • Stain or seal the fence once the wood is dry, then refresh the finish every two to three years, or sooner on the sunniest side.
  • Keep soil, mulch and sprinklers off the bottom of the boards, trim back vines, and check gates and fasteners each spring so small issues do not become loose boards.

Frequently asked

Fence questions we hear most

Should I choose cedar or pressure-treated pine?
Pressure-treated pine is the most common and most affordable choice and holds up well when it is sealed. Cedar costs more, resists rot and insects naturally, stays straighter and weathers to a silver-gray. Both work in Kentucky; the decision usually comes down to budget and the look you want.
When can I stain a new wood fence?
Pressure-treated wood needs to dry first, which usually takes several weeks or more depending on the weather. A simple test: sprinkle water on a board. If it soaks in, the wood is ready for stain; if it beads, wait. Cedar can usually be sealed sooner.
Which side of the fence faces the neighbors?
The finished side normally faces outward, toward the neighbors or the street, and many HOAs require it. If you want both sides to look finished, choose board-on-board or shadowbox.
What wood fence styles do you build?
Privacy fences in dog-ear and flat-top styles, board-on-board, shadowbox, horizontal slat and picket fences, with cap-and-trim upgrades and matching custom gates.
What affects the price of a fence?
Total length, height, material, style, the number and size of gates, slopes, rocky ground, removal of an old fence and how easy the fence line is to reach. Board-on-board and cedar cost more than a standard pine privacy fence.
