Fence installation questions, answered
Straight answers about aluminum and wood fences, costs, permits and our Central Kentucky service area.
Fence questions we hear most
Does an aluminum fence rust?
No. Aluminum does not rust the way steel and iron do. Residential aluminum fencing also has a powder-coated finish that protects its color, so upkeep is usually just an occasional wash with soap and water.
Does an aluminum fence give privacy?
Not much. Aluminum pickets are open by design, which is ideal for front yards and pools but not for screening a patio. Many homeowners use aluminum at the front and a wood privacy fence in the back.
How long does a wood fence last in Kentucky?
A well-built wood fence often lasts 15 to 20 years with regular sealing. Humid summers and freeze-thaw winters are hard on wood, so the quality of the lumber, how the posts are set and how often the fence is sealed make the biggest difference.
How much does a fence cost in Lexington, KY?
Fences are priced mainly per linear foot, plus gates. Published Lexington cost guides put an installed 6 ft wood privacy fence at roughly $20 to $27 per foot, and national guides put aluminum at roughly $20 to $55 per foot. Your price depends on footage, height, style, gates and ground conditions, so the only accurate number is a quote after measuring. Call 859-351-1886 to arrange one.
How do I get an estimate?
Call 859-351-1886 or use the contact form. Share your address or nearest town, roughly how many feet of fence you need, the material you are leaning toward and any gates. Photos of the fence line help. We then arrange a time to measure.
Do I need a permit for a fence in Lexington, KY?
Yes, if the fence is 24 inches or taller. Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government requires a permit for all fences and walls 24 inches or higher above grade, applied for online with a site plan. Properties in historic (H-1) or neighborhood design (ND-1) overlays may have extra requirements, and HOA and deed restrictions are separate from the city permit.
How do I know where my property line is?
Start with your recorded plat or the survey from your mortgage closing, which usually show the lot lines. If the line is unclear or a neighbor disputes it, a licensed surveyor can stake it. It is worth confirming before a fence goes in.
How long does fence installation take?
Most residential fences take one to a few days on site once materials are in hand. Long runs, rocky ground, many gates or weather can add time. Permits, HOA approval and 811 marking happen before installation day.
